James Hudson Beare

James Hudson Beare was a consultant physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia. He was born in Adelaide, the son of Frank Howard Beare, a physician. Beare’s brother, Thomas Hudson Beare [Munk’s Roll, Vol.XII, web], also became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Beare was educated at the Collegiate School of St Peter’s, Adelaide. He went on to study medicine at the University of Adelaide.

From 1958 to 1963 he was a resident medical officer at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He then went to the UK, where he was a registrar at Bethnal Green Hospital in London. In 1965, he was back in Australia, working as a senior registrar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. From 1966 to 1970 he was an honorary assistant physician in Adelaide. In 1970, he became a senior visiting physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, a post he held until 1979.

Outside medicine he enjoyed golf, tennis and stamp collecting. In 1958, he married Jillian Vincent. They had three children.
