Mahmoud Salah El Din

Mahmoud Salah El Din was professor of medicine at the University of Alexandria and Minister of Health in 1952. He studied medicine at Cairo University and qualified in 1925. He then worked as a clinical assistant before joining the Ministry of Health research department in 1927 and obtaining his MD that same year. Remaining in this post until 1930, he then travelled to the UK and passed the diploma in public health from Liverpool University Medical School and the membership of various medical royal colleges in 1935.

In 1940 he was appointed an assistant professor in the faculty of medicine of Cairo University and moved to Alexandria University three years later as professor of internal medicine. From 1950 to 1952 he was dean of the faculty of medicine and was then made Minister of Health in the government of Naguib Helali.

In 1967 he won the state appreciation award in science and was awarded the first class medal of the Egyptian Republic in 1970.

He died in 1978.
