Alan Henry Clift Couch

Alan Henry Clift Couch was a consultant chest physician for the United Norwich Hospitals. He was born in Kent, the son of Henry John Milford Couch, a naval architect, and Gladys Susannah Couch née Clift, the daughter of a baker. He was educated at Erith Grammar School and then went on to study medicine at Middlesex Hospital Medical School. He qualified MB BS in 1943.

He was a house physician at Mount Vernon Hospital and then joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a surgeon lieutenant.

In 1946, following his demobilisation, he became a house physician and subsequently a medical registrar at Middlesex Hospital. From 1948 he was a senior medical registrar at East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital. In September 1953 he was appointed as a physician in the department of chest medicine, United Norwich Hospitals. He was a member of the British Tuberculosis Association and East Anglian Thoracic Society.

Outside medicine he enjoyed music and sailing.In 1944 he married Phyllis Muriel Couch née Stubley, the daughter of a tailor. They had a son, Michael, two daughters, Susan and Sarah, and five grandchildren.
