Norma Ann Beardwell

Ann Beardwell was a consultant in rheumatology and rehabilitation at Barking Hospital and King George V Hospital, Ilford. She was born in London, the daughter of Frederick Gibbs Beardwell, a company director, and was educated at Sutton High School and the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. She qualified in 1954.

She held house posts at the Royal Free and Brompton Hospital from 1955 to 1956. She was then a senior house officer and registrar at the Royal Free. From 1963 to 1964 she was a research fellow at Tufts University, Boston. Once she returned to the UK, in 1965, she became a senior registrar in physical medicine and rheumatology at the Royal Free. From 1969 she held her consultant post in Barking and Ilford.

She wrote papers on peripheral neuropathy in association with low thyroid, subcutaneous atrophy after local corticosteroid injection and familial ankylosing vertebral hyperostosis, among other topics. She was a member of the British Society for Rheumatology.

In 1957 she married William Ross Cattell, also a physician. They had a son, Ross, and two daughters.
