John Gareth Prior was a consultant physician in thoracic and general medicine at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Born in Grimsby, he was the son of John Renison Prior, a dental surgeon, and his wife Eileen Mary, who was a medical practitioner. After attending Grimsby Winteringham Grammar School, he studied medicine at Cambridge University and Guy’s Hospital. Qualifying in 1974, he did house jobs at Guy’s, the Brompton Hospital and the National Hospital, Queen Square.

In 1978 he became a registrar at Guy’s and a research fellow in their department of medicine the following year. Appointed a senior registrar in thoracic and general medicine in 1981, he took up the post of consultant physician at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital five years later.

A member of the British Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society, he wrote papers on respiratory oscillations in patients with chronic airways obstruction and the clinical pharmacology of asthma.

Outside medicine, he enjoyed horse-riding, driving, gardening and listening to classical music.

He married Josephine Mary (‘Jo’) née Greenwood in 1974. She was a dental surgeon who eventually became director of the Dental Auxiliary School (part of Cardiff University) at Heath Hospital. Jo predeceased him in 2009 and he was survived by his second wife, Karen.
