Raymond Holmes

Raymond Holmes (‘Ted’) was a consultant physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI). After studying medicine at Manchester University and qualifying in 1958, he did house jobs at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. He then became a senior medical registrar at the MRI before taking up a Nuffield medical fellowship at Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, USA. On his return to the UK, he was appointed to a consultancy at the MRI.

He published papers on the structure and function of the small intestine and intestinal brush borders. A member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, he was also a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology.

When he died he was survived by his wife, Tessa, and their children and grandchildren.
