John Atkinson Wilson

John Atkinson Wilson was a consultant physician at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and an allergist at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He was born in Bootle, Lancashire, the son of Henry Atkinson Wilson, a bookseller, and Josephine Ladysmith Wilson née Brew, the daughter of a marine engineer. He was educated at Liverpool Institute High School and then went to Liverpool University to study medicine. He qualified in 1958, with a distinction in physiology.

He held house officer appointments at Walton Hospital and at Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital, and was then a senior house officer at Broadgreen and Walton hospitals. In October 1961 he became a registrar in general medicine at Walton Hospital and, in December 1962, at Liverpool Royal Infirmary. From 1965 to 1966 he was a research assistant in cytogenetics at the University of Liverpool. In July 1966 he became a senior medical registrar at the United Liverpool Hospitals and the Liverpool Regional Hospital Board.

In April 1969 he was appointed as a consultant physician in allergy and clinical immunology at the David Lewis Northern Hospital, the Liverpool Clinic and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Outside medicine he was interested in modern languages and literature, and the construction of stringed instruments.

In 1960 he married Shirley Greenough. They had three sons.
