Annette Sylvia Raikes

Annette Sylvia Raikes was a consultant paediatrician in Poole, Dorset. She was born Annette Sylvia Dickson in London, the daughter of Arthur William Makin Dickson, an inspector of taxes, and his wife, Dora Winifred Dickson. She was educated at North London Collegiate School.

In 1949 she married John Lewis Raikes, an engineer, and they had a daughter.

In the mid-1950s she went to the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1961, when she was in her thirties. She held house physician and house surgeon posts at the Seamen’s Hospital, Greenwich, and was then a resident medical officer at the Royal Free. From 1965 to 1971 she was a senior medical officer in Bournemouth. She was also a clinical assistant, then a medical assistant and subsequently a locum consultant at Poole General Hospital. In 1979 she became a consultant paediatrician.

Outside medicine she enjoyed cooking and travelling.
