William John Nicholson

William John Nicholson was a consultant physician in the geriatric departments of the Brook and St Nicholas hospitals, south London. He was born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, the son of Robert Nicholson, a textile printer. He was educated at Lurgan College, and then went on to Queen’s University, Belfast, where he studied medicine. He qualified in 1954.

He held pre-registration posts at Belfast City Hospital, and then worked as a house physician at Claremont Street Hospital. He moved to the UK mainland, first as a house officer at Bethlem and Maudsley hospitals, and then as a house physician at Whittington Hospital. From 1958 to 1960, he was a medical registrar at St Charles Hospital. He then returned to Whittington Hospital, as a medical registrar, from 1960 to 1962. From 1962 he was a geriatric registrar at North Middlesex Hospital.

In April 1964 he was appointed as a consultant physician to the departments of geriatric medicine at Brook and St Nicholas hospitals in south London.

He wrote articles on, among other subjects, the human brain and monoamine oxidase, diseases of the motor system in old age and haematology.

He was unmarried.
