Verna Sturgess Nicol

Verna Sturgess Nicol was a consultant paediatrician in Kidderminster. She was born Verna Sturgess James, in Leicester, the daughter of Frederick William James, who worked in the textiles trade, and Ida Vera James, a housewife. She was educated at Portland House School in Leicester, and then went on to Birmingham to study medicine. She graduated in 1953.

She held a post as a house surgeon at Worcester Royal Infirmary, and was then a house physician at Gloucester Royal Infirmary. She was a senior house officer in paediatrics at Worcester, and then, from 1958 to 1971, a clinical assistant in paediatrics. In 1978 she was appointed as a consultant paediatrician.

At the time of her election to the fellowship of the RCP in 1991 she listed gardening, painting and travel as her hobbies and interests.

In 1953 she married John Douglas Nicol, a seedsman, who survived her. They had three children.
