John Anthony Edwards

John Anthony Edwards was a professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was born in Chester, the son of Garfield Henry Edwards, and educated at Hawarden Grammar School, Flintshire, Wales. He went on to study medicine at Liverpool University, carrying out his clinical studies at the David Lewis Northern Hospital, Liverpool. From 1960 to 1962, he was a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Following his National Service, he held house posts in Liverpool, at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary and then at the Liverpool Stanley Hospital. From 1964 to 1965 he was a registrar in medicine at Victoria Central Hospital, Wirrall, and then, from 1965 to 1967, a Nuffield research assistant in the department of medicine at Liverpool University.

He then emigrated to the USA, first as a fellow in medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, New York. He became a resident assistant professor of medicine at SUNY, and then, in 1974, an associate professor of medicine.

He married Leila née Vazquez in 1968. They had a son and a daughter. At the time of his election to the fellowship in 1979 he listed gardening, painting and golf among his interests.
