Joyce Beryl Burke

Joyce Beryl Burke was a consultant paediatrician in Reading. She was born in London, the daughter of Albert Victor Burke, a grocer, and Florence Harriet née Liles, the daughter of a grocer. She was educated at Palmers Green High School and Minchenden Secondary School. She then studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1945.

During 1947 to 1948 she held house officer posts at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and then became a medical registrar at the Royal Infirmary, Sheffield. In 1952 she was a house physician at Hammersmith Hospital. A year later, she returned to Sheffield, to the Children’s Hospital, as a paediatric registrar. From 1954 to 1955 she was a paediatric registrar at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and then held the same post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, London. From 1957 to 1962 she was a senior paediatric registrar at Whittington Hospital, London. She was then appointed to her post as a consultant paediatrician to the Reading area.

She wrote papers on, among other topics, pyelonephritis in infancy, neonatal convulsions and infections of the upper respiratory tract.

She was unmarried. Outside medicine, she enjoyed travelling and was interested in Greek archaeology.
