Michael Lawrence Johnson was a consultant dermatologist at Epsom District and East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. He was born in Lincoln, the son of Stanley Merry Johnson, a civil engineer. He was educated at Bedford School, and then went on to St John's College, Cambridge, and University College Hospital.

He held house and registrar posts at University College Hospital, and then became a senior registrar in dermatology at Charing Cross. In 1970 he was appointed as a consultant at Epsom and Redhill. He was chairman of the local research ethics committee and was on the district management team.

He was popular, with a quiet, slightly quirky sense of humour. He and his wife, Pauline Monro, a neurologist and a Fellow of the College, enjoyed music, literature, walking and tandem tricycling. After he retired, he and Pauline worked to improve medical education in Russia. The first multidisciplinary team led stroke unit in Russia will be named after him.
