Ernest Hunt was a consultant physician and cardiologist at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. He was born in Sri Lanka, into a medical family. His father, Alfred Selvaratnam Hunt, was a medical officer, and his grandfather, sister and two uncles were also doctors. He was educated at St Johns in Jaffna and then went on to Colombo University to study medicine.
In 1958 he went to the UK and worked in Grimsby, Mansfield and Nottingham. He was a senior registrar in Leeds from 1966 to 1970, where he developed his interest in cardiology. In 1970 he was appointed as a consultant physician at Huddersfield.
Outside medicine, his main interests were reading, writing, art, woodcarving, cooking and bridge. Following his early retirement due to ill health he became interested in philosophy and in 1996 published a philosophical novel, Venn diagrams.
He married Kanagesway (Kay), a haematologist, in 1957 and they had a daughter and a son. He died suddenly following a myocardial infarction.
