David Beattie Grant was a consultant paediatric endocrinologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and went on to study at Cambridge and the London Hospital.

After National Service in the army in Germany, he was a senior registrar at Great Ormond Street. He then joined the scientific staff at the Clinical Research Centre at Northwick Park Hospital.

In 1974 he returned to Great Ormond Street as the first consultant paediatric endocrinologist in the UK. Despite a heavy clinical load, he continued his research work. He was particularly interested in congenital hypothyroidism and in 1981 established the MRC national register of children with the condition. He was active in national and international paediatric endocrinological societies.

He retired in 1994. He took up archaeology, enrolling for a diploma in the subject at Birkbeck College, and made stained glass and sculpture. He died from metastatic carcinoma of the lung. He was married to Noelene, and they had two daughters, one a doctor.
