Poi Wong qualified in Malaya in the early 1950s. After a post as lecturer in medicine at the University of Singapore, he went to Edinburgh and London for postgraduate training. On his return to Singapore, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Singapore, in 1970, and was later made professor of medicine and dean of the faculty of medicine. He was also a member of the Singapore Medical Council. In addition, he also held consultant appointments at Singapore General Hospital and St Andrew's Mission Hospital.
He was a practising Christian and an elder of the church where he and his family worshipped.
