Joseph Walter Zammit Maempel

J V Zammit Maempel was a former head of the department of medicine at St Luke's Hospital, Malta, and professor of medicine at the University of Malta.

He qualified MD from the University of Malta in 1937. At the end of the Second World War he proceeded to the United Kingdom to continue his postgraduate studies. He obtained his MRCP in 1946.

On his return to Malta he was appointed consultant physician at St Luke's Hospital. From 1967 to 1973, he was the senior physician and head of the department of medicine at St Luke's Hospital. He was made a Fellow of the College in 1965.

Throughout his career he was closely associated with the University of Malta, being appointed professor of materia medica and therapeutics in 1947. In 1967, he was made professor of medicine and head of the department of medicine. Between 1963 and 1966 he served as dean.

Zammit Maempel was a consummate and dedicated physician whose service was characterised by a sense of duty, commitment and dedication. Despite his heavy clinical and academic commitments, he found time to carry out research in the field of diabetes and its' cardiovascular complications. He was always correct, courteous, with a high sense of integrity.

He left to mourn him a wife, three daughters and two sons, one of whom is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
