Joanna Ward was a consultant dermatologist at Hillingdon and West Middlesex Hospitals. She qualified at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. Following house posts at the Royal Free and several years in general medicine, she briefly interrupted her career whilst her children were young. She then went into dermatology and undertook initially part time and subsequently full time training posts at St John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin, the Central Middlesex and Charing Cross Hospitals.

In her part time consultant posts at Hillingdon and West Middlesex Hospitals she coped with large numbers of patients and made a substantial contribution to the postgraduate courses.

From her time as a registrar and senior registrar she held strong views about equal opportunities for women in medicine and she fought hard for deserving women at appointment interviews.

She was a keen, skilled and knowledgeable gardener and a prize-winning photographer of gardens. One thing she would not miss was the annual Christmas Carol Festival which she regularly organized at a small village near Chichester. She had a deep religious conviction which served her well during a long and difficult final illness.

She married John Haggarty, a writer and film director. They had two sons, one of whom has become a leading mime artist and storyteller.
