Thomas Shapter

Thomas Shapter was bom at Gibraltar, where his father, Thomas Shapter, was serving with the 57th Foot Regiment. He studied medicine at Edinburgh and London and graduated in 1831. He practised in Exeter, being physician to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and received public thanks for his services in the cholera epidemic of 1832. He was an authority on the climate of Devon and published articles on this and other subjects. He was mayor of Exeter in 1847. He lived in London during the last few years of his life.
