Gopal Prathap served in the Ministry of Health in Malaysia for almost twenty nine years. He was one of the first chest physicians in the country and made an enormous contribution to the practice and teaching of thoracic medicine.
He was born in Malaysia and graduated from the University of Malaya in Singapore in 1960. He held junior hospital posts in Seremban, Kota Baharu and Kuala Lumpur General Hospitals, before being appointed as a chest physician at Seremban and later at the National Tuberculosis Centre. He was later director of the centre and played a very active part in the tuberculosis control programme which included the implementation of chemotherapy. He also worked as adviser to the Malaysia Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis. In 1987 he was the founder president of the Malaysian Thoracic Society.
Although he was a man of quiet disposition, he was extremely well liked by his professional colleagues who valued his professional opinion and ethical standard of medical practice. He was greatly admired by his junior colleagues whom he helped in the advancement of their medical careers.
He married Vasanthakumari Karunakaran in 1965 and they had one son and one daughter.
