George Pirie, son of Robinson and Margaret Jane (née Joslin) Pirie, was born in Clinton, Ontario, and educated at Dundas School, Humberside Collegiate and Toronto University. For three years he did post-graduate work at the Bellevue, Presbyterian, and the Nursery and Child’s Hospitals in New York before settling to general practice in Calgary; then, recognising his bent for paediatrics, he came to Great Ormond Street Hospital for six years, holding the posts of resident and casualty medical officer. On his return he was appointed physician to the Sick Children’s Hospital of Toronto and associate professor of paediatrics in his parent medical school. There his excellence as a clinician and teacher, his geniality, his good singing voice, his expert bridge playing and his gift as an after-dinner speaker brought him a large circle of friends.

By his first marriage in 1909 to Margaret Walsh he had one daughter, by his second in 1923 to Marguerite Hess, two daughters.
