William Henry Paine

W. H. Paine was born at Stroud, the son of John Paine, bank manager. He received his medical education at University College, London, and qualified as L.S.A. in 1847. Having taken the M.R.C.S. diploma in 1851, he returned to Stroud to practise. He was physician to the Stroud Hospital for thirty-five years. He was secretary of the Cotswold Naturalists’ Field Club for twenty-two years and took a leading part in local public affairs. Paine married in 1850, a daughter of John Burder of Codham Hall, Essex, and had eight children.
