John Morgan was born in Sydenham, London. His father, Charles Henry Morgan, was an accountant whose wife Lucie Raeburn Ellis was the daughter of an actor, George Ellis.
John was educated at Raby Lodge and Whitgift School, and went on to Guy’s Hospital medical school, University of London. After graduation, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served until December 1947. On demobilization, he held house posts as outpatient officer at Guy’s and then as house physician. He developed an interest in dermatology and in 1950 he was appointed registrar in the skin department at Leeds General Infirmary, and subsequently tutor and senior registrar. From 1952-56 he was senior registrar at Manchester and Salford Hospital for Skin Diseases, and at the end of his final year he was appointed consultant dermatologist to South Teeside Hospitals, taking administrative charge of the team in 1969. He was also clinical tutor in postgraduate medicine, South Teeside, from 1968.
He married Elizaberth Verity, daughter of Ralph Franklin Eminson, a doctor, in 1947, and they had three children. Outside medicine and his family, his interests lay in bird watching, boating, sea fishing and painting. From 1964 he was a member of the Runswick and Staithes branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and chairman 1966-69.
