John Watt McLaren was born in Essex to parents with engineering interests. He was educated at Cheltenham College, Caius College at Cambridge, and St Thomas’s Hospital. He took up diagnostic radiology and became head of that department at St Thomas’s Hospital, which he managed very successfully until his retirement in 1971. He moved in the higher reaches of his specialty, which earned him the College’s recognition in an honorary MRCP in 1951 and a fellowship in 1963. He was a solitary bachelor with a somewhat discouraging and gloomy manner that prevented his talents from bearing the fruit that would have been expected.
