A recognized expert in the specialty of endocrinology, Jonathan Brian Jaspan pursued his career in the United States. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating from the University of Witwatersrand Medical School he went on to train as an endocrinologist at the University of Chicago. He was appointed as an assistant professor in the department of medicine at the university, and later became an associate professor. He then joined the faculty of the Tulane University Medical Center School of Medicine, holding the Tullis Tulane alumni chair in diabetes and working as the director of the diabetes programme.

He published extensively, served on national scientific review committees and lectured widely. His research over the course of his career was recognized and supported by grants from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the American Diabetes Association. A revered teacher, in 1994 he received the coveted Gloria P Walshe award for teaching excellence, presented annually to a single faculty member chosen by the medical student body. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

He married Jacqueline, a psychiatrist, in 1969 and they had three children. His tragic early death was the result of complications following a bone marrow transplant.
