John Grindall Holmes

John Grindall Holmes was a dermatologist based at Coventry. He born in Harrogate, the son of a doctor, and educated at Shrewsbury School. He went on to Caius College, Cambridge and St Mary’s, qualifying in 1945. He was a keen rower and captained the Caius College crew and the St Mary’s Hospital Boat Club.

He served in the RAMC between August 1945 and January 1948, mainly in the Middle East.

He held junior medical posts at St Mary’s, London, and at Derbyshire, Sheffield and Cardiff Royal Infirmaries. Choosing to specialize in dermatology, he completed his MD thesis on epidermophytosis in coal miners. In 1957 he was appointed as a consultant dermatologist at the Coventry and South Warwickshire Group of Hospitals.

From 1965 he served on the council of Coventry Cathedral. He married Helah Patricia Dyche in 1949 and they had a son and a daughter.
