Edward Gunson was born in Auckland, New Zealand, the son of William Gunson, a grain merchant, who had emigrated from Cumberland in 1866. His mother was Jane (Burton) Gunson. At the age of seventeen he entered the pharmaceutical firm of John Edson, but in 1904 decided to study medicine for which he entered Edinburgh University. Following graduation he worked in England until 1914 when he served with the R.A.M.C, in France and the Middle East for four years. From 1919 to 1940 he practised in his native Auckland, which he left on account of failing health for Melbourne, where he died ten years later.
In 1918 he married Mary Elizabeth Carmichael, a nursing-sister. They had one daughter.
