C. B. Fox was born at Truro. His medical education took place at King’s College, London, Edinburgh and Paris. He obtained the M.R.C.S. and L.S.A. diplomas in 1863 and the Edinburgh M.D. degree in the following year. He started to practise at Scarborough but in 1873 moved to Chelmsford on being appointed medical officer of health for Central, East and South Essex. Both during his tenure of office and after his early retirement to Ilfracombe in 1879, he wrote numerous articles for medical journals, mostly on subjects connected with public health.
