Ernest Alfred Fairburn

Ernest Alfred Fairburn was a consultant dermatologist to the Queen Elizabeth, General and the Children s Hospitals in Birmingham from 1958 to 1986 and a tutor and senior clinical lecturer in dermatology at the University of Birmingham. He was born in London where his father, Ernest Grenville Fairburn, was an industrialist. He was educated at John Lyons public school and then went on to London University, completing his clinical studies at the Middlesex Hospital. After junior posts he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps for two years, from 1946 to 1948.

Having decided to specialize in dermatology, he held various clinical and research posts at the Middlesex. In 1957 he spent one year as a research associate in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He went on to Birmingham where he was a consultant dermatologist and a clinical lecturer from 1959.

Outside medicine he was a keen walker, gardener and an amateur botanist. He married twice; to Margaret Isabel Nicholson in 1948 and, secondly, to June. His son, Christopher, by his first marriage, is a psychiatrist in Oxford.
