Munk's Roll

Munk's Roll

The Roll of the Royal College of Physicians of London was first published in 1861 and originally compiled by the then Harveian Librarian, William Munk.

Entries for all College Fellows dating back to the College’s foundation in 1518 (and also Licentiates up to 1825) were researched by Munk. Subsequent Harveian Librarians have continued this work, commonly referred to as Munk’s Roll. The College has a near-complete collection of obituaries, making it a valuable biographical resource for those interested in medical and social history, and for family historians.

Availability

Eleven printed volumes have been published covering 1518 up to 2004, while entries for 2005 onwards are available online as Volume XII.

Selected historical entries, as well as Volume XII can be read freely online, and a searchable index to all printed entries is also available. If you would like to see an obituary that is not online, please contact us for a copy.

Today

The College welcomes assistance in writing entries for Munk's Roll. If you find a name with no entry we may have an author in place, but do please contact us if you think you can help.

Family history

If you are researching family history, use the ' Search Munk's Roll' function. If your relative is not here then the College is unlikely to hold any biographical information on them, but the College may hold other resources that can be of help to genealogists.
